Labor, budget bills still hot issues in Albany

Members of the state Assembly and Senate are returning to Albany in mid-November as this magazine goes to press.

The lawmakers are expected to review and possibly vote on overrides of the governor’s budget vetoes and his rejection of the legislation boosting the state minimum wage.
The Assembly has already voted to override the minimum wage veto, and state Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno has stated publicly that he expects the Senate to take up the issue.

In early November, Gov. George Pataki vetoed another important labor bill. This legislation, S.772/A.8231, would make it an unfair labor practice to hire permanent replacements for striking employees.

PEF also is waiting to see how S.2458A/A.8187A fares. It would require the state Labor Department to report annually on the complaints it receives of public employee safety and health violations, and on its investigations and findings. The bill was delivered to the governor November 4. — Sherry Halbrook
