HONORING JUDI — Senator George Maziarz presents a check to PEF Region 1 Coordinator Joyce Degenhardt (L), April Gaines (Judi's sister), and Division 180 Council Leader Barb Rock, to launch the Judi Scanlon Memorial Scholarship at a September scramble tournament held at the Byrncliff Golf Course. The event raised $7,000.

The Judi Scanlon Memorial Scholarship is now a reality. PEF members in Region 1 honored their friend and co-worker by establishing a scholarship in her name.
By holding a golf tournament in September, they raised $7,000 to help launch the scholarship.
A patient killed Scanlon, a nurse and intensive case manager in Buffalo, during a home visit in 1998.
“Violence in the workplace is still a very serious issue,” said PEF Division 180 Council Leader Barbara Rock. “By having this tournament, we bring back the issue of safety in the workplace.
“It also gives us the opportunity to honor Judi. The scholarship is a way for someone else to carry on Judi’s desire to help other people.”

A $1,000 Judi Scanlon scholarship will be awarded to an individual who plans to pursue a career in the health field, according to Region 1 Coordinator Joyce Degenhardt. The presentation will take place at the next tournament, September 15, 2005.
Getting it together
Region 1 members came up with the idea of having a golf tournament as a social event.
“When they presented the idea, Joyce and I thought the success of a golf tournament would be better if it was linked to a charity,” Rock said. “So, we decided to establish a scholarship in the memory of Judi.”
More than 70 members from several state agencies participated in the September 16 scramble tournament held at the Byrncliff Golf Course in Varysburg between Rochester and Buffalo. Each paid $75 to play. Theresa Feathers, an engineering secretary at Parks and Recreation, designed the graphics for the flyer and poster.
“It was the work of a lot of members throughout Region 1 that made this a success,” Rock said.
Member wins too
To add excitement, organizers from PEF Division 219 bought insurance to sponsor a $15,000 hole-in-one contest. Steven Nawrocki, PEF Division 224 Council Leader and a tax auditor, aced 150 yards at the eighth hole using a three-wood.
Nawrocki donated $500 of his winnings to the scholarship. Other contributions came from honorary chairs Assembly Member Sam Hoyt and Senator George Maziarz and from several community sponsors and other unions.
Judi’s mother, Joyce Jewitt, and sister, April Gaines, attended the dinner and her uncle Ronald Jewitt played in a foursome with three of his friends.
“It was such a success, we are looking forward to another tournament next year,” Rock said. The tournament will be open to all PEF golfers.
