Scholarships, grants abound in January
Time to cash-in for top grades
By DEBORAH A. MILES
If college tuition is putting a pecuniary burden on your bank account, you might want to apply for a number of government and private loans, as well as scholarships for your child.

January is traditionally the month for submitting financial aid applications and attending workshops across the state on how to apply for financial aid.

The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation provides free information on their Web site, www.hesc.org, or you can call 1-800-NY-HESC for information about scholarships, grants and loans. The Web site also has instructions for completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.

For local scholarships and loans, ask for information from your child’s guidance counselor.
Union-based scholarships are also available to the children of PEF members. In addition to PEF’s Joseph Scacalossi Scholarship program, many of the union’s regions and divisions offer scholarships. Check with your division leader or steward for details.

PEF Scacalossi scholarship
