Membership drive pays off

Last year at the 2004 PEF convention, delegates from the state Office of Mental Health and the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities set a goal for their divisions to find out how many feepayers they could convert to PEF members.

After a year of hard work, the results were gratifying. About 300, or nearly one-third of the approximately 1,300 feepayers joined PEF.

At the 2005 convention in Rochester, the OMH and OMRDD divisions with the greatest success were recognized.

The top three PEF divisions at each agency were presented with awards at convention luncheons.

Taking home the honors at OMH were:
• Division 223 at Elmira Psychiatric Center, which cut its feepayers by 23, or 68 percent;
• Division 213 at Bronx PC, which cut its feepayers by 21, or 37 percent; and
• Division 267 at Manhattan PC, with 20 converts, for a success rate of 40 percent.

At OMRDD, the most successful divisions were:
• Division 304 at the Central NY Developmental Disabilities Services Office, which had the highest percentage of success, 70 percent, with the fewest actual converts, nine, because it had a small pool of feepayers from the start;
• Division 251 at the Capital District DDSO, with a 67 percent success rate based on 24 fewer feepayers; and
• Division 197 at the Broome DDSO which had 13 converts, for a 43 percent success rate.
Leaders at both OMH and OMR said they want to see the membership drive continue through the coming year.

They also set other priorities, such as continuing to build involvement of their nurses, and taking further advantage of the Work Force Initiatives (training) Grant Program provided in the PS&T contract. — Sherry Halbrook
