Community mobilizes
PEF leads coalition to reform Wal-Mart

In a nationwide campaign to shed light on the shameless labor practices of Wal-Mart, PEF took a key role during the week of November 13, called “Higher Expectations Week,” to help reform this corporate giant.

The union was instrumental in bringing Robert Greenwald’s new film, “Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Prices” to the Capital Region. Before the premiere, which drew a standing-room crowd on November 16, PEF President Roger Benson addressed the media along with members from the Capital District Wal-Mart Accountability Coalition (WAC), which is comprised of more than a dozen labor and community organizations.

“This film comes at an opportune time,” Benson said. “Wal-Mart has been spending a lot of time and a great deal of money trying to make the public believe it is the shining image of a good neighbor. We are here to tell you that’s nothing but transparent PR propaganda.”

Benson, was referring to the more than 1,300 charges of child labor law violations across the country that found minors working too late, too many hours per day, and during school hours, according to Wal-Mart’s own internal audit.

“Wal-Mart has become synonymous with gender discrimination, taxpayer-funded health care and poverty level wages,” Benson said.

The week also included protests at three Wal-Mart locations in the Capital Region. For information about future action plans against Wal-Mart, visit the PEF Web site, www.pef.org, and click on “Wake Up Wal-Mart.”  — Deborah A. Miles
