Appreciates how
PEF gives back
To the Editor:
Four years ago, the committee representing PEF’s Joseph Scacalossi Scholarship fund awarded $4,000 to my daughter Joanna, to be applied over four years of college.
She graduated summa cum laude, at the top of her class, in May from Nazareth College in Rochester.
I want to thank the committee and share my appreciation that she was chosen for this award.
It contributed to a wonderful outcome.
As the committee continues to offer these awards every year to those who meet the requirements, I am proud to say PEF gives back to its members in numerous ways, and this is one big one I will always appreciate.
Thank you.

DDD’s attitudes
locked in past
To the Editor:
The Division of Disability Determinations of the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance has an extremely hidebound management that does not account for individual change, growth, or improvement.
Managers’ attitudes and views toward individuals were formed years ago — sometimes as long as 20 or 30 years ago — and rarely change. The management culture is static, rigid, and top-down and seldom tolerates individual viewpoints. This leads to groupthink.
Even if one works for a manager one never worked with before, that manager will make assumptions based on one’s reputation — which is ostensibly the consensus opinion of management but, in reality, is a “correct” opinion calculated to gain favor with the higher-ups.

Injured member needs your help
To the Editor:
PEF Division 299 is asking for assistance in the form of vacation time donations to help our union brother Kevin Daly.
Kevin has been a PEF member since he started working for the state Department of Correctional Services in January 1989 and is currently the counselor for Auburn Correctional Facility’s intermediate care program unit.
Kevin went out for surgery in November 2004 and, due to complications, has been unable to return to work.
Kevin is running out of leave and will not turn age 55 (to retire) until the end of October. We are asking union brothers and sisters to donate some of their vacation time to him. We hope we can receive enough time through leave donations to allow Kevin and his family to maintain a steady income until he can retire in October or is able to return to work.
Division 299, Kevin and his family will be extremely grateful for any donation of time that is made. As Division 299 council leader, I would like to thank you in advance for your help and I hope we are able to come through for Kevin and his family in their time of crisis.
