A GENEROUS GESTURE — PEF Region 8 treasurer Scott Ray and Region 8 Coordinator Lou Matrazzo present Barb Rock, co-chair of the Scanlon scholarship committee, with a check for $400 at the Executive Board meeting in June. Matrazzo challenged the other regions to match the donation.

First Scanlon scholarship winners selected

By holding a golf tournament last September, PEF Region 1 members raised $7,000 to launch the Judi Scanlon Memorial Scholarship. At PEF’s Executive Board meeting in June, PEF President Roger Benson and PEF Division 180 Council Leader Barbara Rock drew the names of the first two recipients.

The first winner is Kristen Stoczynski, daughter of PEF member Robert Stoczynski who works at the state Office of Children and Family Services in Buffalo. Kristen will pursue a social work/psychologist degree at Hofstra University.

The second winner is Jennifer Walia, a student of biological sciences at the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education. Her father, PEF member Dr. Jospal Walia, works at Buffalo Psychiatric Center.

Each student will receive a $1,000 award at the 2nd annual scholarship golf tournament to be held September 15 at the Byrncliff Resort and Conference Center in Varysburg, between Rochester and Buffalo.

“The scholarships are awarded to students who plan a career in the health field,” Rock said. “It is our way to honor the memory of Judi and help someone else carry on Judi’s desire to help other people.”

A patient killed Scanlon, a nurse and intensive case manager in Buffalo, during a home visit in 1998.

Those who want to play in the four-person golf scramble, must register by September 1. The cost is $75 and is open to all PEF golfers. State Sen. George Maziarz and Assembly Member Sam Hoyt are the honorary chairs of the scholarship fund.

To participate, request a registration form from the PEF Region 1 office at 1-800-462-1462. To become a sponsor, call Rock at (716) 816-2574 or PEF Region 1 Coordinator Joyce Degenhardt at (716) 853-3100.
