Edwards earns
SEFA award
By SHERRY HALBROOK
PEF Executive Board Member June Edwards, a nurse at University Hospital in Syracuse and co-chair of the PEF Nurses’ Committee, was recently presented the Governor’s Award for her “outstanding support of the 2003
SEFA
Campaign of the SUNY Upstate Medical University Team.”
SEFA stands for the annual State Employees Federated Appeal, which solicits pledges from state employees to support United Way charities and not-for-profit organizations.
The award commends Edwards for “your generous and caring spirit, which reminds us what can be accomplished when we give of ourselves for the benefit of others.”
Edwards is council leader of PEF Division 320 at the hospital and a member of PEF’s PS&T Contract Team.
Edwards said she felt honored to receive the award as the PEF representative to the SEFA committee at University Hospital, but it is really a recognition of the generous spirit of the many PEF members and other hospital employees who support
SEFA.

She was singled out, Edwards said, “because I spearheaded a campaign that created an annual $1,000 prize for a SEFA contributor at the hospital selected at random.”
The prize is created by $250 donations from PEF, two other state-employee unions at the hospital, and the hospital’s central administration.
The excitement the prize generated boosted the hospital over its SEFA goals in 2002 and 2003. In 2002, it raised $324,316 and last year it raised $427,621.
The committee had given away a large-screen color TV in 2000 and 2001, which also created substantial interest in the campaign.
“Every year, the amount we raise is going up,” Edwards said, “but we don’t just try to raise money.”
Perhaps the important achievement of the SEFA campaign, she said, is the way it brings everyone at the hospital together.
Edwards also runs a Days of Caring program at the hospital that collects new and used books for children in the community, as well as the hospital’s pediatric unit.
