Health benefits still endangered
Currently, our best information from the state Department of Civil Service indicates that, given its present interpretation of the new Medicare prescription drug program, the state will continue our current coverage.
However, we are still concerned that the new Medicare program, combined with a recent federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ruling, may give the state the means to make significant, adverse changes to our health care benefits and the prescription-drug coverage in particular.
We must remain alert and prepared to act on short notice if the state starts to move in that direction.
Keep current on this by attending your local PEF Retirees chapter meetings and maintaining your membership status. Organized action is our best protection.
PEF Retirees is preparing to take political action if the state tries to reduce our health care benefits or negatively affect other areas of our retirement benefits. One of the best ways to do this is to get involved in the political campaigns leading to the November elections.
You may be asked to set aside a few days or a weekend or two this fall to help campaign for a political candidate who is willing to stand up for our earned retirement benefits. Be prepared to help them get elected, so they can help protect our retirement benefits.
A number of you recently have allowed your PEF Retirees membership to lapse. Our strength is in our numbers, so, we will soon conduct a membership renewal campaign.
If your dues aren’t current, please send us a check today. If you have questions, call our office at 800-342-4306, ext. 289.
