PEF peers into budget, page by page, department by department

Budget serves ‘bad apples’ for Big Apple

The Executive Budget for 2005-06 would substantially reduce state inspections of super markets and other retail food stores, as well as pet dealers and breeders.

The budget proposes to switch from the current requirement of annual inspections by PEF members at the state Department of Agriculture and Markets to a new “risk-based” system.

The change is meant to save $1.1 million by reducing inspections and eliminating 21 positions in the department’s bureau of Consumer Food Services.

PEF is calling on state legislators to reject this proposal “which can only increase the risk to public health.”

Recent events have demonstrated clearly the need to protect the public health by a vigorous system of inspection to prevent the spread of diseases that can affect animals and the food supply. — Sherry Halbrook
