PEF Region 1 launches Scanlon scholarship
Due to a successful golf tournament last fall that was held in memory of Judi Scanlon, PEF members in Region 1 are now offering a scholarship in her name.
The golf tournament raised $7,000 to launch the scholarship. The first recipient of the scholarship will be awarded $1,000 at the next golf tournament, planned for September 15. The winner must be pursuing a career in health. Scanlon was a nurse and intensive case manager who was killed by a patient during a home visit in 1998.
PEF Region 1 Coordinator Joyce Degenhardt said the scholarship is open to Region 1 members and their dependents based on a current membership list.
The application deadline is April 29 and the announcement of the winner, who will be selected by a random drawing of applications, will be made June 1.
To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must be matriculated in a health care related curriculum, such as nursing, social work or pharmacology. The winner must provide proof of registration from an accredited college or university.
To receive an application, contact the PEF Region 1 Field Office at 1-800-462-1462 or write to:
Scholarship Committee, NYS Public Employees Federation,
Region 1, 110 Pearl Street Dun Building, 7th floor, Buffalo, New York 14202.
Winners of the scholarship are exempt for one year before reapplying.
