3 PEF-backed candidates win seats in NYS Legislature

Three of the five candidates endorsed by PEF were successful in the February 12 special mid-term elections for the state Legislature.

Democrat Carl Andrews won his race in the 20th Senate District in Brooklyn.

In the Assembly, Saratoga County Republican Roy McDonald scored a big victory in the 100th District and Republican William Sanford of Onondaga County was a winner in the 118th District.

However, Manhattan Republican John Ravitz lost his bid to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of Roy Goodman in the 26th Senate District. And Staten Island Democrat James Hart was defeated in the race to represent the 60th Assembly District.

The successful candidates will serve the remainder of the current term, which expires December 31.

New elections for all seats in the Legislature will be held in November, but they will be based on new district lines based on the 2000 Census. The state’s congressional districts will also be redrawn for that election. — Sherry Halbrook
