Defend your insurance now
At the risk of being accused of overkill, I am urging each of you to write and/or call your state Assembly member and senator in support of two bills to help protect your health benefits:
• A.7915 — This bill would prohibit public employers from diminishing health insurance benefits or the employer contributions to the health insurance of retirees. It would cover retirees from the state, local governments, school districts and other public employers.
• S.973A/A.4962A — This bill would prohibit public employers from diminishing the employer contributions to the health insurance of retirees from May 1, 2004, through May 15, 2005. It also would cover retirees from the state, local governments, school districts and other public employers.
Your individual participation as a PEF Retiree to preserve our current level of benefits is critical.
When contacting your legislative representative be sure to identify yourself as a PEF Retiree because retirees have a reputation as people who exercise their right to vote. Our power lies in our voting.
Please remember to bring any concerns to your local PEF Retiree chapter representative.
Chapter meetings for May and early June include:
Buffalo — 9 a.m. May 3 at Potts Banquet Hall, 694 S. Ogden St.;
Southern Tier — 10 a.m. May 15 at the Hibernian’s Club in Elmira;
Syracuse — A June 14 annual picnic is planned;
Albany — Noon May 3 and June 7 at the New York State United Teachers headquarters in the Albert Shanker Conference Center, 800 Troy-Schenectady Road, Latham. A June 14 picnic is also planned;
Long Island — Noon May 3, at the PEF Office, 1383-16 Veterans Memorial Highway, Central Islip.
