Unions plan rally to end mandatory overtime
By DEBORAH A. MILES
It’s time to dust off your rally shoes and swap your stethoscope for a bull horn.
PEF nurses will storm the steps of the state Capitol with nurses from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU 1199) and the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) on Nurses’ Lobby Day and rally, Monday, May 16.
This second annual tri-union rally is designed to send a loud message to lawmakers, to urge them to pass legislation that could end chronic understaffing and mandatory overtime.

“We have made our voices heard on these issues before, and we will not give up until legislation is passed to protect both patients and nurses,” said PEF President Roger Benson.
Eight other states — Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington and West Virginia — have passed laws to ensure quality health care.
“One hundred years ago, the rally cry for organized labor was the eight-hour day,” Benson said. “Isn’t it a shame that in the 21st century, the eight-hour day is not a reality for so many nurses. A nurse who is exhausted and overworked cannot provide the quality of care patients need and nurses want to deliver.”
Join your union brothers and sisters and help send a powerful and united message to the governor. Put in your leave request now.
PEF will provide free bus transportation from across the state, a rally T-shirt, lunch and a box dinner. Buses will arrive in Albany in time for the rally and depart at 4 p.m. after nurses meet with key legislators.
