Nominees sought for ’05 Privatization Buster Award

PEF leaders realize privatization is a major threat to state jobs. This year, the union launched a $1 million campaign featuring print and TV ads calling for laws to bring greater accountability to state contracting.

In September, PEF will honor a member who has helped lead this fight.

The Privatization Fight-Back Award has been presented annually since 2000 to members who made a difference. PEF Region 1 activist Tom Grace was first to receive the honor for calling attention to certain charities that compete with PEF members for state work.

Dennis Beagle received the award for his fight in Washington in defense of state services to veterans.

Ed Snow blew the whistle on a state plan to allow a contractor to duplicate services performed by PEF members at Sunmount Developmental Disabilities Services Office sites.

Bill Parolari was recognized for his role in stopping inmate labor and saving jobs for members at the Wyoming Correctional Facility.

And last year, Lou Ferrone Jr. was honored for recognizing and forming a campaign against the hiring of more contractors at the state Department of Transportation after it launched a new “transformation” plan.

If you know a member who is aware of problems such as outsourcing work and is actively trying to stop it, complete the coupon on the back page of this Communicator. And remember, you can even nominate yourself.
