make diversity work for you, for New York state
Look around, what do you see? How diverse is your workplace? Is everyone pretty much the same race, sex, age and religion?
Do people with disabilities have a fair chance to compete, perform and advance on the job? Does everyone get a fair shot at hirings and promotions? What about shifts and work assignments?
Who’s asking?
PEF’s Employment Opportunity Committee wants to know about your experiences, problems, concerns and suggestions.
Chaired by Doug Jasinske, the committee includes Sharon Fehlman, PEF Executive Board Member Bellew McManus, Trustee Olubiyi Sehindemi (“Mr. B.”) and PEF Director of Field Services Downstate Kali Zervos.
Is Article 36 working?
The group monitors how well Article 36 of the PS&T contract, which provides for equal opportunity in the state workforce, is working.
The committee also develops programs and strategies to help New York build on the diverse strengths and resources of its people.
The committee encourages PEF members of all backgrounds to participate in events such as the annual Black and Puerto Rican NYS Legislators’ Conference and the annual Somos El Futuro legislative conference. And it continues to urge that Article 36 language be amended to include sexual orientation as part of its mandate and that the term “handicapped” be replaced with “individuals with disabilities.”
The committee also urges PEF to provide mandatory diversity training for its statewide officers, regional coordinators and stewards.
