PEF nurses ‘unite to fight’ for top goals
More than 130 nursing delegates are returning from this year’s PEF Convention in October with an arsenal of information on how to pressure New York State to improve compensation for all nurses, ban mandatory overtime and institute safe staffing ratios.
A new campaign, “PEF Nurses Unite to Fight for Fair Pay, Safe Staffing, and End to Mandatory Overtime,” is being launched at the convention. All nurse delegates are receiving a special packet of information about the campaign at the convention.
The campaign includes activities that nurses across the state can do to persuade state lawmakers to pass the Mandatory Overtime Bill in conjunction with Safe Staffing Ratios. The legislators need to hear how understaffing and forced overtime are putting patients at risk and driving nurses from state service.
Fair compensation for nurses was also addressed in a convention workshop entitled “Understanding Your Role in the Upgrade and Salary Differential Processes for Nurses,” conducted by PEF research associate Arlene Zilkowski and nurse organizer Nancy Wolff.
Participants learned how to keep the pressure on their state agencies and the Dept. of Civil Service to approve both PEF’s request for the reallocation of nursing titles to higher pay grades, and enhanced geographic salary differentials.
Other ideas outlined in the packet include a letter-writing campaign targeted at state agency commissioners and the director of classification and compensation to secure enhanced geographic salary differentials, and information on how to make nursing compensation a priority for your local and statewide labor-management committees.
