Health care one more good reason to vote
Over the last few years, the state Assembly and Senate have introduced legislation to protect the health care benefits of NYS retirees. This year, there were two bills.
A.4962A/S.973A was written to ensure that a public employer could not diminish the health care coverage of retirees and was written to expire on May 15, 2005. It was passed by both the Assembly and the Senate, but was vetoed by the governor in September.
The second bill, A.4963A/S.973A was exactly the same, but did not include an ending date. It was passed by the Assembly in February, but has remained bottled up in the Senate Civil Service and Pensions Committee. We have encouraged the Senate committee members to move this bill but without success.
Even if we get this out of the Senate, it’s doubtful the governor would sign it this year. If it is not enacted, we will try to have it reintroduced in the next session.
We will alert our PEF Retirees chapter presidents when your efforts are needed to support this legislation, so stay in touch with your chapters and attend the meetings to stay informed.
With the general election coming up on November 2, many PEF retirees are volunteering to make phone calls, distribute campaign literature and get out the vote, even as far away as New Hampshire and Pennsylvania, on behalf of PEF-endorsed candidates.
You may get a call soon from your chapter president or a fellow PEF retiree asking if you would like to donate your time and energy.
Please do as much as you can and be sure to vote on November 2.
