PEF Board adopts 2005-06 budget at March meeting

By LINDA RUBIN and SHERRY HALBROOK
The PEF Executive Board adopted the union’s 2005-06 budget at the board’s March meeting in Albany.

During the PEF budget debate, a motion was made and carried to fund the cost of single-room hotel accommodations for board members at their quarterly meetings. The expense is funded from a 5 percent reduction in the budgeted appropriation for postage.

The board also decided to use money, originally budgeted for a unfilled trainer position, to fund an additional field representative position in Region 9, instead. And the board voted not to fund proposed leadership training to be held at the Turning Stone Casino.

Also, continued funding for the union’s Go Public legislative campaign was approved.
PEF President Roger Benson reported on his administration’s top priorities — job security, retirement reform and stronger contracts. He also reported on the parole fragmentation issue and internal issues arising at the national AFL-CIO.

The board also was briefed on the state budget and PEF’s efforts to preserve jobs and services.

The board approved the agenda and travel voucher for the PEF 2005 convention to be held in Rochester. It also voted to amend the Specials Rules of Order for the PEF convention, but this requires the board to vote on it again at a later meeting.

Amendments to PEF’s Divisions Annexation/Secession Policy were presented and adopted at this meeting. And an ad hoc committee report on PEF ethics and divisions’ issues was referred back to the committee for more legal advice.

Two new board members filling mid-term vacancies — Evelyn Fuentes representing members at the state Department of Agriculture and Markets and Germaine Greco representing members at the state Office of Temporary Disability Assistance — were sworn in at this meeting.
