FERRER FOR MAYOR — PEF announces its support of Fernando Ferrer for mayor of New York City at an October press conference.
PEF supports Ferrer for NYC mayor race
By SHERRY HALBROOK
Topping the list of PEF endorsements for local candidates and issues in the November 8 elections are two statewide ballot initiatives and the New York City mayoral race.
PEF has endorsed Democrat Fernando Ferrer for mayor of the Big Apple. And the union is supporting both the state Transportation Bond Act and a proposed amendment to the state constitution aimed at reforming the state budget process.
“PEF is proud to throw it’s support behind Fernando Ferrer for mayor,” PEF Vice President Pat Baker told reporters at a press conference in October on the steps of City Hall in Manhattan.
“PEF is especially encouraged by Mr. Ferrer’s support to keep the state Labor Department’s only Telephone Claims Center here in New York City,” she added. “The state plans to close the center in lower Manhattan and move the jobs upstate.
The Transportation Bond Act would authorize the state to borrow $2.9 billion over five years to fund improvements to highways, bridges and mass transit. Without this investment, New York would lose $4 billion in federal transportation funding, and the state budget would be $100 million short this year and the gap would be several times as big next year.
PEF is joining the NYS AFL-CIO in supporting the budget reform amendment which is meant to make the budget process more accountable, democratic and timely.
