One fight down, more to go
By ROGER E. BENSON
The ratification of the PS&T contract marks the end of the fight for the current contract. However, this is only one more step in the process of improving the lives and working conditions of our members, and only one facet in the many-sided struggles PEF and our members will face.
Over the past two contract fights we have built a reputation for political activism, militancy and an ability to mobilize to achieve a common goal. This reputation has allowed us to continue to build on our past success. We have been able, with each contract, to achieve long sought after goals, correcting contract inequities that have built up over the past 25 years, and the fruits of our efforts have been well received, as these contracts have been ratified by margins of 85 percent and more.
As we continue to build on our progress, we must position ourselves for the fights that are sure to come — budget fights, efforts to privatize the services our members provide, and threats to the state’s pension system that could undo much of the progress we have made in tier equity, to name a few.
Our success has been born from our action, and our work now and in the election in November will help in those struggles.
As election day draws closer, I urge you to get involved in PEF’s efforts in national, state, and local races. Your involvement in these efforts and your support for candidates that support us and the services we provide is crucial to our future success and will help us to continue to build on our efforts to improve the lives and working conditions of our members.
