Nurses from across New York state are urging the Legislature to pass:

• Safe Staffing Ratios (A11015) – Inadequate staffing creates a real risk to patient health and safety. It drives nurses out of the profession because they don’t want to work in a chronically understaffed facility. New York must establish safe-staffing standards to ensure quality care and ultimately save lives.

• Safe Patient Handling (S3839/A2047) – Manual lifting and repositioning can result in patient and worker injury and increased costs for facilities. Hospitals and nursing homes that have implemented safe-patient-handling programs have reported dramatic improvement in the rate of injuries, resulting in fewer employee absences, and workers compensation claims, as well as medical/indemnity costs.
