Caring for the disabled is a Labor of Love
Keep quality public services at the Office
of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities

The governor’s budget proposal would eliminate 284 full-time positions at the state Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD) jeopardizing quality public services to some of our neediest New Yorkers.

Agencies all across New York State are already doing more with less due to previous budget cuts. Any further cuts to staffing at OMRDD would diminish the quality of care to the disabled. Cuts to administrative staff merely shift those responsibilities to consumer-care staff, taking them away from their primary mission of providing services.

Cuts to OMRDD’s Institute for Basic Research threaten efforts that may prevent mental retardation in tomorrow’s children, and derail attempts to find ways to improve the lives of today’s disabled.

Tell the governor and legislative leaders to maintain staffing levels at OMRDD to ensure the developmentally disabled continue to receive the quality public services they deserve.
