Abolishing parole officers won’t abolish crime.Stop cuts to Parole. Protect our communities! New York needs MORE Parole Officers NOT LESS. Eliminating Parole Officer positions will make It Impossible to provide proper supervision of Parolees in our communities. The number of parolees supervised by Parole Officers has increased from 53,700 in 1994 to 59,350 in 2002. The Executive Budget proposes to eliminate 47 Parole Officer positions. A plan to improve Parole Supervision requires the Division of Parole to: • KEEP all parolees on intensive supervision for the first two-thirds of their parole supervision time. This will ensure that all parolees get the supervision they need to remain crime-free in our communities; • LIMIT the maximum caseload of any Parole Officer to allow more intensive supervision of parolees. • REQUIRE the Division of Parole to fill all vacant parole officer positions over the next three years. At a minimum, for this year restore the 47 Parole Officer positions eliminated in the Executive Budget. For each parolee that stays out of jail, taxpayers save at least $40,000 in court and prison costs.
