The time is now…Public service — not private profits It’s no accident that state employees are called “public servants.” Why? Because state workers always put public welfare before private profits. Drivers don’t have to worry that a state Department of Transportation (DOT) engineer might try to squeeze in just one more bridge inspection than is safe. The children of elderly parents don’t have to be concerned that state nursing home inspectors might cut corners — for the sake of profits — to ensure nursing homes are attentive to their patients. State insurance company and bank examiners do the highest quality of work for a fraction of the cost of private consulting firms. New Yorkers know that public servants are committed to their work, but what many New Yorkers don’t know is that public servants also provide the best value for their tax dollars. This is a fact that the private sector wants to keep private. Analyses of six bridge inspection contracts show the average hourly rate charged by a private bridge inspector was $69.56, compared with the $45.23 hourly cost of an inspector in a similar position with DOT, including the cost of their benefits. But, the high cost of private bridge inspections is just the tip of the iceberg. A recent analysis by the Fiscal Policy Institute shows private contractors are costing the state a HALF BILLION DOLLARS more than it would cost public servants to do the same work.
