“In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of 9/11, we have focused unprecedented resources to the rebuilding
and revival of lower Manhattan ...” – Governor Pataki June 24, 2005 So why is NYS-DOL moving jobs? New Yorkers are working together to rebuild lower Manhattan. Millions of dollars are being offered to keep and bring jobs back, but the New York State Department of Labor (DOL) hasn’t gotten the message. The DOL is closing its New York City Unemployment Telephone Claims Center — and moving 250 jobs upstate. Not only is the DOL moving jobs out of lower Manhattan, it’s crippling its ability to serve non-English speaking unemployment claimants and causing calls from thousands of New Yorkers to go unanswered. This could cost New York’s businesses more of your money, perhaps as much as $10 million — more of your money for training new workers upstate, increases in non-recoverable unemployment insurance overpayments, and more of your money for translation services to respond to non-English speaking claimants. When it comes to rebuilding lower Manhattan, it’s time for the Department of Labor to get on the same page as the rest of us. Keep the New York City Unemployment Telephone Claims Center open and keep the jobs in lower Manhattan. Call 1-877-255-9417 and tell the state to keep the TCC in NYC.
