PS&T contract provides training grants
Joint labor-management committees in state agencies that identify educational or training needs for PEF-represented employees may apply for a Work Force Initiative (WFI) grant. The grant program is funded under Article 15 of the PS&T contract through the Joint Professional Development Committee (PDC).

Approximately $600,000 is available for WFI grants through March 31, 2007.

“These grants are beneficial to members, as training needs may be driven by changes in agency or organizational mission and goals,” said Cliff Merchant, PEF director of human resources and education. “Other training is prompted by a change in work processes, in legal or regulatory requirements and changes resulting from technical advances.”

Grant proposals may be submitted for any amount. However, different submission dates apply depending on the amount requested.

For example, grant applications for $5,000 or less may be submitted at anytime, but proposals for more than $5,000 must be submitted by January 31, 2006.

At its July meeting, the PDC approved training grants for the state Department of Transportation, the Finger Lakes DDSO and Rochester Psychiatric Center. Merchant said WFI guidelines and applications are available at agency/facility training or personnel offices.

Applications are also available from PEF representatives or on the PEF Web site, www.pef.org
The completed application must be submitted to the program manager, WFI grants, Governor’s Office of Employee Relations.
